| Hartland Abbey is a 12 C family home. Children can enjoy doing the quiz, exploring house and history, as you walk around and everyone receives a prize. You may see donkeys, black welsh sheep or peacocks in grounds. You can walk to the beach, climb the Gazebo and look out across the Atlantic Ocean. The carriage museum has a carriage for every occassion, it is sometimes posible to take a ride in one of these. | Experience over 1000 years of history at Buckfast Abbey. Home to benedictine monks, it is open to the public outside of service times. There are beautiful stained glass windows to see and bee-keeping in practice. The gardens provide a pleasant environment for visitors and monks. Buckfast Abbey | Haldon Belvedere, also known as Lawrence Castle, is a triangular tower which stands on Haldon Hill in 5 acres of woodland. A spiral stone staircase leads to the roof terrace where there are spectacular views. Open to public 1:30pm-5:30pm Sun and BH (Feb - Oct). Haldon Belvedere (Lawrence Castle) triangular towers | Dartmouth Castle began in 1388. This fortress has guarded the Dart Estuary for over 600 years. Climb to the top for great views across the estuary. There are guard rooms and a maze of passages to explore. | Powderham Castle (1391) has some majestic rooms. Deer Safari (ex. charge) in the deerpark, home to 600 fallow deer. Meet the friendly pets at the secret garden or play in the huge adventure play castle. Children can also enjoy the nature trail, win a prize on the treasure trail or ride a pony. Apr - Oct. Powderham Castle | Berry Pomeroy Castle is a 15th Century ruin. It consists of a tudor mansion within the ruins of an earlier castle. The Gatehouse chamber still has a wall painting. The mansion was never completed and the place was abandoned by 1700. Reported to be haunted. Berry Pomeroy Castle | Killerton House has 200 years of century costume on display and a victorian laundry. The beautiful Killerton Gardens contains rhododendrons, magnolias and rare trees. | Castle Drogo was built between 1920 -1930. The granite building contains family keepsakes. Guided tours or an activity possible on most days. There are walks through the gardens, quizzes and trails to do. Dogs on leads welcome on estate and in informal gardens. Castle Drogo Devon | See remains of the largest castle in Devon. Okehampton Castle was probably built after 1068, mentioned in the Domesday book (1086).. You can listen to an audio tour that brings the castle to life. Picnic area and walks in woodland nearby. | The last remaining water-powered forge in England. The foundry used to make 400 tools a day including sickles, scythes and shovels for west country farmers and miners. Watch the water wheels driving the tilt hammer and grindstone. There are regular tours and demonstration of the machinery. Finch Foundry | Smeaton`s Tower is a lighthouse that was originally built on the Eddystone Reef in 1759, but it was moved stone by stone in the 1880`s to the Hoe, as the sea was undermining the rock it was standing on. Fantastic views from the lantern room. Lighthouse has been restored to its former glory. Smeaton`s Tower | This classic Norman Castle was founded soon after the Conquest. | At number 32 New St. you can step back in time. This Elizabethan House was a late 1500`s sea-captains house. It was saved from demolition in 1929 and survives almost complete. Panelled hallways, spiral stairs, low ceilings and creaking sloping oak floors. The Elizabethan House | In the 13th Century Buckland Abbey was a monastry. This later became the home of Sir Francis Drake. The Abbey is now a combination of furnished rooms and interactive museum galleries. Try on a Tudor costume, ask about the tracker pack and quiz and explore the grounds on 1 of the 4 woodland walks. .Buckland Abbey | This authentic Elizabethan Merchants House was built around 1575 for the Kelland family. | Morwellham is a historic port and copper mine. You can step inside the over crowded miners cottages and stroll along the original quayside and docks. Group visits (must be with a minimum of 16 people) and include `The Mine Experience`a 45min journey by rail underground and other activities. Morwellham | Kents Caverns tour takes an hour but allowing 2.5 hours for entire visit is advisable. Inside the temperature is a constant 14°C all year. Kids can enjoy the Fun Dig or paint and decorate tribal faces on the walls. Kids can leave a hand print on the wall in stone age style, do some brass rubbing or draw a mammoth on the wall. Kents Cavern Prehistoric Caves | Instow signal box is over 130 years old. It is the first grade 2 listed signal box. It used to control the signals at the station and operate the level crossing.
